Convert Uppercase to Lowercase in Word

Microsoft Word can change selected uppercase text to lowercase from the Home ribbon or with the Change Case keyboard shortcut.

Use the Change Case menu

Select the words or paragraphs you want to alter. On the Home tab, find the Font group, choose the Change Case button marked Aa and select lowercase. Word changes the capitalisation without replacing the words or normal paragraph formatting.

  1. Select the text that needs a case change.
  2. Choose Home, Change Case (Aa), then lowercase.
  3. Review names, brands and acronyms that may need capitals restored.

Use Shift+F3 in desktop Word

With text selected, Shift+F3 cycles through lowercase, UPPERCASE and Capitalize Each Word in desktop versions of Word. Some laptop keyboards also require the Fn key. Word for the web and mobile editions can behave differently, so use the visible Change Case menu when the shortcut does not respond.

Lowercase is different from sentence case

The lowercase option changes every letter, including the first character of sentences and proper names. Sentence case restores an initial capital, but automatic conversion cannot reliably recognise every person, company, product or acronym. Proofread the result before sharing the document.

Use the browser converter as a fallback

If your editor does not expose Change Case, copy the text into FixCaseNow and choose lowercase. The conversion runs in the browser and the result can be pasted back into Word. Text copied through a plain browser field may not retain document styling, tracked changes or comments, so use Word directly when those details matter.
